The rules that are applicable for the traditional
backgammon, also holds true for the online
backgammon games. The game is played over a board
with 24 triangular pegs and number of checkers –
equal for both players. The rules suggest that these
checkers would be evenly distributed across the home
boards of both the players; you need to move them
through the roll of die and get them off the board
before your opponent does.
According to the rules in online backgammon, players
initially roll a single dice to decide the starter;
player with the highest roll gets to start. The game
proceeds with the roll of the pair of die,
alternately by each of the players. The movement of
checkers are according to the value on the die; you
can choose to move a single checker or split each
value for two separate checkers. However, if the
values on both the dice are the same the number of
moves is doubled to four instead of two. Thus, you
get the advantage of four moves over your opponent;
this is a great benefit as you can change your
online backgammon strategy on its basis.
You can always hit and cancel a single checker of
your opponent in online backgammon, in which case
his checker is placed in standoff. If there are more
than single checker in one position, then you cannot
move your checker onto that position. Thus, if you
have moved into standoff position, you cannot move
out of it, unless the position on the dice value is
open. It is very tricky, since you cannot move any
other checker, as long as you have a checker in
standoff position.
